How to Use ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Guide
How to use ChatGPT: a step-by-step guide from opening an account to writing proper prompts. Modes, limits and ways to improve your first results.

To use ChatGPT, open chatgpt.com, try it without an account in supported regions or sign up with email or another supported login. Then write your goal, the needed context and the answer format into the message box. Do not treat the first answer as final truth; refine with questions and verify facts against sources. How to use ChatGPT well depends on three things: the account type, the chosen mode and the precision of the task.
Starting is easy. Getting useful results demands a bit more precision than "write me a marketing plan." ChatGPT is under no obligation to correctly guess a goal, audience or constraint you never stated.
This guide was verified against OpenAI's official help documents on 30 July 2026. Button locations, plan limits and model names may change; the working principle — goal, context, output, verification — does not.
How do you register and sign in to ChatGPT safely?
- Type
chatgpt.cominto the browser yourself and check the domain. - If a no-account trial appears, you can start with a simple query. For history, sharing and personal settings, signing in is more practical.
- Choose the sign-up button and use email, Google, Apple or another supported login method.
- After the account is created, open Settings from the profile menu; review Data Controls and Security.
- Do not mix work and personal use. If a company account exists, sign in to the organisation-approved workspace.
OpenAI's official beginner FAQ states that ChatGPT works on the web, iOS and Android, and that a no-account trial is possible in supported places. Message and feature limits vary by plan and model.
7 steps for your first ChatGPT conversation
1. Pick one job
For a first trial, take a concrete, verifiable task: shortening an email, finding errors in a text, building a topic outline or explaining a spreadsheet. A boundless task like "teach me everything" makes the result unmeasurable.
2. Give the needed context
Who is it for? Which country, industry, product and date are intended? Writing "a service business with three branches in Baku" instead of "a small business" changes the direction of the answer.
3. Specify the output form
State openly whether you want a table, 5 bullet points, 120 words, an email, a checklist or a comparison. "Keep it short" is a different length for every person.
4. Note the constraints
Give banned terms, budget, deadline, tone and source requirements upfront. For legal and medical topics, say the answer must be informational and that you require official sources.
5. Critique the first answer
Instead of "write it better," point at the problem: the third paragraph is repetitive, the example does not fit the Azerbaijani market, there is no source, the sentences are too long. Precise feedback steers the next version.
6. Verify facts and calculations
Open the link, find the quote on the page, compare dates and countries. Re-check mathematical results with a calculator or a second method. A confident tone is not proof.
7. Edit the version you use yourself
If the text will be published under your name, the tone, meaning, facts, authorship and responsibility for the outcome are yours too. Copying the answer does not finish the job.
How do you write a proper ChatGPT prompt?
There is no secret magic word for prompts. OpenAI's official prompt advice recommends stating the task clearly, giving the needed context and tone, breaking complex work into smaller parts and refining the result across follow-up messages.
Simple prompt formula
[Goal] + [context] + [input material] + [constraints] + [output format] + [verification criteria]
The difference between a weak and a working prompt
Weak: "Write me an Instagram post."
Working: "Write an Instagram caption for a company providing B2B accounting services in Baku, explaining its new tax-reporting service. The audience is executives of companies with 10–50 employees. 120–150 words, a calm professional tone, one real problem, three benefits and a CTA for a meeting at the end. Do not use unverified figures."
A long prompt is not always a good prompt. If the requirements contradict each other, 500 words will not help either. Instead of "very short, but explain every detail," choose a priority.
For more ready-made examples, see the article of 50 ChatGPT prompts in Azerbaijani. Rather than copying an example verbatim, replace the bracketed context with your own work.
How does ChatGPT work with search, files and images?
ChatGPT does not only write text. Depending on plan and account access, it can offer web search, file analysis, image creation/editing and voice. A feature not appearing does not necessarily mean a problem with your account; region, app version, plan and current limits all matter.
| Job | How to start | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Current information | Choose web search and request dates/sources | Does the link really support the claim? |
| PDFs and documents | Attach the file and ask about a specific section | Were tables, footnotes and scanned text read correctly? |
| Spreadsheet analysis | Explain the columns and the calculation required | Were blanks, currencies and date formats handled? |
| Images | Create an image or request changes in an existing file | Lettering, anatomical details, logos and usage rights |
| Voice | Speak in voice mode and confirm the result in text | Names, terms and Azerbaijani pronunciation |
According to the ChatGPT Search documentation, search is available in the main plans including Free and in some logged-out experiences. Search speeds up finding sources; it does not cancel source verification.

How are data and privacy settings configured in ChatGPT?
In personal Free, Plus and Pro workspaces, you can switch off the use of new conversations to improve the model. Close "Improve the model for everyone" under Profile → Settings → Data Controls. OpenAI's Data Controls FAQ says the setting syncs across web and mobile for the whole account.
Temporary Chat does not appear in history, creates no memory and is not used in model training. It can nonetheless be retained for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring. Temporary Chat is not a secure document vault.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and API inputs/outputs are not used for model training by OpenAI by default. The opt-out on a personal account and a company contract's data guarantee are not the same thing. Do not upload customer lists, passwords, card details, identity documents, medical records or confidential contracts without need.
Files can be stored separately from conversations with the Library feature. According to OpenAI's retention policy, deleting a conversation may not automatically delete a file stored in the Library; the two must be checked separately.
The 7 most common beginner mistakes
- Expecting comprehensive answers without giving a goal and an audience.
- Writing five contradictory tasks into one prompt.
- Using potentially invented links, quotes and numbers without opening them.
- Confusing a confident answer with a correct one.
- Uploading confidential information as-is to a personal account.
- Publishing the first answer under your own name without editing.
- Piling unrelated topics into one conversation and confusing the context.
Choosing New chat when starting a new topic looks trivial, but it reduces context errors. For longer-term work, organising the topic and documents inside a Project can be more comfortable.
Questions about using ChatGPT
Is ChatGPT free?
The Free plan offers the core ChatGPT functions with limits. Message, model, file, image and other tool limits can change. Check the current differences in Subscription inside ChatGPT and on the official plan page.
Can ChatGPT be used in Azerbaijani?
Yes. You can ask questions and give tasks in Azerbaijani. Errors are possible in terminology, suffixes, place names and formal style; edit the final text for language and facts.
Are ChatGPT's answers always correct?
No. The model can produce wrong facts, non-existent sources and wrong calculations. For current and serious decisions, use web search, open the links and go all the way to the primary or official source.
Is uploading a document to ChatGPT safe?
The risk depends on the document's content and the account type. Check Data Controls, anonymise confidential parts and use the business workspace approved by your organisation.
How do you delete an old conversation?
Choose Delete from the conversation menu. Archiving is not deleting. If the Library feature is active, also check whether a file uploaded in the conversation remains separately.
