What is data analytics, what does an analyst do and how do you enter the field? A skills map, the tool sequence and a realistic career path in Azerbaijan.

By the second minute of a conversation with a young person who says "I want to be a data analyst," it becomes clear: what draws them is the words Python and neural network, while they cannot picture what the daily work consists of. Yet the bulk of this job looks far less romantic — cleaning messy spreadsheets and hunting the answer to "why is this number like this?"
Data analytics is the craft of answering business questions on top of data: why did sales fall, which customers are churning, which channel earns. This article shows the field realistically: what work is done, which skills are needed in which order, and what the entry path looks like in the Azerbaijani market.
What does a data analyst do daily?
A typical week's split is roughly this: collecting and cleaning data (the biggest share — messy exports, duplicates, format chaos), refreshing reports and dashboards, investigating specific business questions and explaining the results to decision-makers. Note: "building models" is not on this list; that is the data scientist role's centre of gravity. The analyst's power is not statistical complexity but converting a business question into the right data question.

The answer to the most-asked question is here: Python sits fifth, not first. Landing an entry-level job with the Excel+SQL+BI trio is realistic in the market; Python adds an edge, but its absence closes no doors. The Excel foundation and the pivot habit are kilometre zero of this road.
SQL: the field's real common language
For an analyst, SQL's core is a week's material: SELECT-FROM-WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY, ORDER BY. Those four constructions cover the great majority of real queries. The learning method is known too: not theory, but writing a hundred queries on practice platforms. SQL knowledge is the skill tested fastest at interview and the hardest to bluff.
The portfolio: stronger proof than a diploma
In this field, the employer is convinced by work samples, not certificates. A strong portfolio consists of three projects: one Excel/BI dashboard (on real or open data), one SQL analysis (queries + commentary on the results), and one full cycle — question → data → cleaning → analysis → presenting the conclusion. The Azerbaijani market: a realistic picture
Local demand for data analytics concentrates in banks, telecoms, e-commerce and state digitalisation projects. The entry routes are practically three: transitioning from inside an existing job (an accountant or marketer slides into analytics through their own field's data; the most workable path), internship programmes, and "reporting" roles at small companies. The foreign remote market is open too, but competition is high and strong English is usually required beyond SQL+BI.
One honest warning: there is distance between the promise of "become a data analyst in three months" courses and market reality. In three months the skeleton of the skills is built; job-readiness usually takes 6–12 months of consistent practice and portfolio work. This is not to discourage — it is for planning.
Will artificial intelligence replace this field?
AI has already changed the analyst's toolbox: ChatGPT writes the SQL query, Copilot builds the chart. But the work's core does not automate: posing the right question, doubting the data's quality and translating the result into business language appreciate in value instead. The realistic forecast: mechanical report-churning will get squeezed, while question-asking analysts grow in value. The strategy follows from that: make thinking, not the tool, your core skill.

My maths is weak — is this field not for me?
The maths an analyst needs is secondary-school level: percentages, means, ratios. The statistical concepts (distributions, correlation) are learned later, in context. Mathematical depth is the data-science side's requirement.
What is the difference between a data analyst and a data scientist?
The analyst explains the past (what happened, why); the scientist models the future (what will happen, the forecast). The tool difference follows: the analyst leans on SQL+BI, the scientist on Python+ML. The career usually flows from the first towards the second.
Which free resources can you start from?
Microsoft's own training for Excel, interactive practice sites for SQL and Microsoft Learn for Power BI are enough. A paid course's main value is not the content but the discipline frame; if you can build that yourself, the free road works fully.
Is there an age/education restriction for the first job?
The field is skill-and-proof based: if the portfolio is strong, the diploma's name is secondary. For career changers, prior domain knowledge (finance, sales, logistics) is an advantage, not a minus; you read that field's data better than anyone.
