How were the AI tools evaluated?

I do not use "tested" as an artificial scorecard whose results change monthly. There are two layers of verification here. In the first, each product's features, plans, limits and data terms were checked against official documentation. In the second, the selection was split across six real work scenarios: text editing, sourced research, long-document analysis, code, visual design and media production.

Because no single account has access to every feature of every paid plan on the same day, I do not invent "9.7/10" scores. Behind such a score you cannot see which model, language, account type and input data produced it. Instead, here is a trial protocol you can repeat yourself:

1. Same input: two tools receive the same document, the same task and the same constraints.
2. Same acceptance criteria: factual errors, missed requirements, language mistakes and the minutes spent on final editing are recorded.
3. Second attempt: the problem in the first answer is explained, and how well the tool executes the correction is checked.
4. Source control: quotes and numbers are opened on the original page; a link merely existing does not count as accuracy.
5. Data test: deleting a file, managing history, changing team permissions and exporting results are each checked.
6. Total cost: alongside the monthly subscription, human correction time, hitting limits and switching costs are counted.

For example, telling a tool to "summarise" a 12-page Azerbaijani report is a weak test. A clearer task looks like this: "Extract the three main findings from the report, give the page number for each, do not change the numbers, separate commentary from fact, and fit the answer into 300 words." That input shows not only the tool's fluency but its obedience to instructions.

The date of the evaluation matters. AI products can change models, limits and policies under the same name. This article does not declare a permanent champion; it gives a selection map for 30 July 2026.

The best AI tools of 2026: the shortlist

Being first on the list does not mean "better than the rest." You can draft presentation text in ChatGPT, but assembling the finished visual in Canva may require less manual work. Perplexity finds sources; NotebookLM reads your chosen source packet under tighter control. The work looks the same; the decision risk differs.

For everyday text work: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

ChatGPT: for those doing many different jobs with one tool

ChatGPT is one of the most comfortable starting points for a user seeking an everyday assistant. Writing text, analysing files, structuring ideas, explaining spreadsheets and turning repetitive work into a dedicated flow all gather in one interface. OpenAI's official plan page compares the features and limits of the free and paid plans.

The strength is also the risk: because it can do so much, a user can accept every answer with the same level of trust. Imprecision in a marketing idea and imprecision in a tax document do not produce the same consequences. It is healthier to treat ChatGPT as a working layer, not a source. Facts, prices, legal and health claims must be verified separately in primary sources.

Results in Azerbaijani are usually serviceable, but suffix, style and local-terminology errors can remain. Instead of "improve the text," writing the audience, tone, sentence length, terms to keep and facts not to change stabilises the output considerably. Claude: for long documents and editing discipline

Claude suits users who work with long documents, compare several versions of one text and intervene heavily in writing structure. Anthropic's official plan comparison shows individual, team and enterprise options, along with additional workflows such as Claude Code.

Claude should not be chosen on the sentence "it always writes better." Writing quality depends on the topic, the input material and the request. Its strong suit is often not regenerating a text from scratch but editing while preserving the logic of the given material. Quotes, numbers and legal conclusions must still be verified separately.

Gemini: for those whose work centres on a Google account

If Gmail, Docs, Drive and other Google services are the centre of your work, Gemini's advantage is not one model's answers but its closeness to that ecosystem. The Google AI plans page shows that features vary by plan and country.

The key question here is not "is Gemini good?" It is: is the feature available on your account type and in Azerbaijan? A personal Google account and a Workspace account may not show the same capability. Before subscribing, verify the tool's presence in the specific Gmail, Drive and Docs flows you will use.

If you are testing a text tool for a document tailored to a specific vacancy, apply the fact, privacy and human-review boundaries from the preparing a CV with AI workflow rather than a general demo. A fluent result does not verify a candidate's experience.

For research: Perplexity or NotebookLM?

Perplexity and NotebookLM do not solve the same problem. Perplexity searches the open internet for answers and sources. NotebookLM is better suited to working within the sources you give it. The first is a discovery tool; the second resembles a controlled reading room.

Perplexity: a fast start for finding sources

Because Perplexity shows citations next to its answers, it quickly builds an initial map for market, product and topic research. The official Perplexity Pro explainer lists extended citations, file uploads and features like Research.

A citation being visible does not make the fact true. The system can find the right page yet draw a conclusion the page does not contain, mix up dates, and present a secondary source as primary. A good workflow: get the source list from Perplexity, locate the key claim in the link, check the date and geography, then write your own sentence.

NotebookLM: for staying inside your own documents

If you work with contract packets, research papers, interview notes or internal reports, NotebookLM draws a clearer boundary. Google's official limits document discloses the notebook and source counts for free accounts and the daily usage limits. Limits can change with plans.

Source-bounded work has its blind spot too. If you have uploaded wrong or outdated documents, the system can produce tidy but stale answers within that closed packet. Every notebook should show each source's owner, date and reliability status. That is not the tool's job; it is the decision of the person assembling the packet.

In daily research the two can run in sequence: find initial sources with Perplexity, upload the selected PDFs and pages to NotebookLM, then ask cross-document questions. Keep links to the primary material in the final answer.

Specialised AI tools for code, design, audio and video

A general chat assistant can do every job to some degree. At the production stage, that "some degree" turns into a lot of editing time. Code inside the IDE, design within a size and brand system, audio with licence and pronunciation control — these show the value of a dedicated tool.

GitHub Copilot: help without leaving the coding flow

GitHub Copilot brings code completion, chat, agents and code review close to the development environment. According to GitHub's plan page, the free plan comes with monthly limits; paid individual plans give broader usage and model choice. Because prices and credits change, check the current table on that page.

Code written by Copilot running does not prove it is secure. Tests, dependency audits, input validation and human review remain. In a company repository, the data policies of an individual plan and a business plan may not be identical. Canva Magic Studio: for speed and ready formats

Canva Magic Studio is practical for a small team that wants presentations, social posts, simple video and resizing gathered into one design flow. Canva's official announcement shows AI text, visual and editing functions combined in the same workspace.

Canva's weak point is not the tool itself but everyone falling into the same template language. Adding your brand colour and logo does not create differentiation. Adobe Firefly: for moving from generation to professional editing

Firefly's value is not only image creation. Results can continue into Photoshop, Illustrator, Express and other Adobe workflows. Adobe's plan page, checked on 30 July 2026, shows free daily generations, paid credit packages, and image, video and audio capabilities.

Adobe presents its own models and partner models in the same environment. Convenient — but the usage rights are not identical. Adobe itself notes that the fit of partner-model outputs for a project must be checked by the user.

ElevenLabs: voice quality with consent control

ElevenLabs specialises in text-to-speech, voice cloning, dubbing and agent voices. The official API pricing page compares plans and usage-based volumes. But a good demo does not mean the same result in every language.

For Azerbaijani, a dedicated pronunciation list is needed for names, surnames, place names and loanwords. And whose voice is it? Without written consent, usage duration, advertising permission and deletion terms, a voice clone can be technically excellent and legally-ethically unusable. Runway: making the credit maths visible in video trials

Runway offers text- and image-to-video, visual editing, upscaling and access to several models in one environment. Runway's current plan page openly shows how credits are consumed across models, durations and quality in the Standard, Pro and Max plans.

Comparing the monthly price is not enough. How many generations did you run for five seconds of usable video? If frame continuity, text errors and brand fit required eight attempts, the real cost is eight generations.

How should price, privacy and the Azerbaijani language be checked?

An AI subscription's price does not end with the amount leaving your card. Waiting when limits fill, switching to another plan, editing the output, separate accounts for team members and data export all change the total cost. At month's end write down these four numbers: subscription, extra credits, human correction hours and the number of outputs accepted for use.

For example, if a $20 tool delivers 40 finished texts a month, the subscription cost alone is $0.50 per text. If each text takes 20 minutes of editing, the main cost is not the subscription but the editing time. If a $40 tool halves that time, the expensive plan can be cheaper in the total account. Five questions for privacy

• Can the text and files I upload be used in the model's training?
• Does that choice differ across individual, team and API accounts?
• Is it possible to switch off history and delete data?
• In which country is data stored, and where is the subprocessor list?
• When an employee leaves, who keeps the data and built agents in their account?

Uploading customer lists, contracts, health data or unpublished financial documents as-is to a free personal account is not a proper start. Where possible, anonymise the data, provide the minimum portion, and use an organisation-approved account. For sensitive decisions, legal and information-security specialist review is required.

A short test packet for Azerbaijani

A good result in English does not guarantee a good result in Azerbaijani. Prepare 20 examples from your own work. Include suffix-heavy constructions, possessive forms, complex names, local company names, AZN formats, dates, and both formal and conversational tone.

1. Ask it to reduce a 300-word text to 180 words without losing the meaning.
2. Deliberately add five suffix and punctuation errors and have it edit them.
3. Assign it to separate fact from the author's opinion in one sentence.
4. Provide a unified spelling list of Azerbaijani and English terms.
5. Blind-test the result with a native-language editor.

At the end, compare error types and correction minutes — not "I liked it." If the tool speeds up the writing while loading the editor with more work, the gain is cosmetic.

A 7-day plan for choosing the right AI tool

Starting with the free plan looks smart, but aimless trialling is still wasted time. At the end of the one-week plan a decision must emerge: buy the tool, drop it, or move to a second stage.

1. Day 1, pick the job: write down one task that repeats most during the month and has visible results.
2. Day 2, measure the baseline: record the time and errors of doing that job without AI.
3. Day 3, choose two tools: keep at most two candidates from the same category. Skimming ten tools does not improve the decision.
4. Day 4, run five real examples: include difficult and incomplete inputs, not clean demos.
5. Day 5, read the security terms: check data usage, deletion, team permissions and contract terms.
6. Day 6, calculate the full cost: combine subscription, credits and editing time in one table.
7. Day 7, decide: adopt the tool, drop it, or write concrete acceptance thresholds for an additional 30-day pilot.

The healthiest start is often not three general tools but one general assistant, one source tool and one genuinely needed production tool. For example, ChatGPT + NotebookLM + Canva. For a code team the combination might be Claude + Perplexity + GitHub Copilot. For a video producer, a general assistant + Firefly + Runway may make more sense.
