Fiverr Guide: From Creating a Gig to Selling
A Fiverr guide: creating a Gig, ranking in search and winning the first sale. How the platform works, pricing tactics and practical steps to grow earnings.

Fiverr is a freelance marketplace where the freelancer places their service in a storefront as a ready-made offer called a Gig, and the client finds that service, chooses a package and places the order within the platform.
Here the first sale rarely comes from merely opening a Gig. The narrow result the buyer is searching for, comparable packages, the right questions to start the work and a genuine work sample must complement each other. If the storefront is clear, the client sees what they are buying; if the scope is foggy, every sentence after the order can turn into a revision dispute.
Fiverr's features, limits, price thresholds and payment rules can change. The platform numbers in this article were checked against the current Fiverr Help Center documents on 30 July 2026; when creating your own Gig, treat the latest terms visible in your category as authoritative.
How does Fiverr work, and how does it differ from Upwork?
| Stage | Fiverr | Upwork |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | The freelancer creates a service storefront — a Gig | The client posts a listing, the freelancer applies |
| Buying path | The client can order a package directly or request a custom offer | Proposal, interview and offer become a contract |
| Core sales work | The Gig explaining itself in search and comparison | Choosing the right listing and an individual proposal |
| Scope risk | An order can start prematurely if packages and requirements are incomplete | Scope is agreed in the proposal and interview |
| Income | 80% of the cleared payment on a completed order | The amount after the 0–15% fee shown per contract |
Fiverr's official explanation for freelancers presents the profile, the Gig, order management, earnings, levels and long-term client relationships as parts of the same system. Creating a Gig is not a sales guarantee; it is the orderable form of your offer.
If you prefer the model of applying individually to listings, compare with the Upwork guide. On both channels the service is an independent working model; check the legal and operational responsibility in advance in the freelancing basics. If you are looking for a stable employment relationship, assess remote work options separately.
Which service should you choose for the first Gig?
"Logo design," "SEO" and "video editing" are categories, not yet sales offers. The first Gig should state a buyer situation, a visible deliverable and a boundary together.
| Broad service | Clearer Gig | Core boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Logo design | A wordmark and usage files for a new local café | Naming and full brand strategy not included |
| SEO | A 10-page technical audit for a small service site | Implementation and ranking guarantees not included |
| Copywriting | Structure, copy and 5 FAQs for a B2B service page | Interviews and extra pages priced separately |
| Video editing | 3 vertical videos of up to 60 seconds from a podcast | Raw filming and audio clean-up priced separately |
| Data work | Cleaning and a monthly dashboard for one sales spreadsheet | Live integration not included in the package |
For a good topic, look for three proofs: you can genuinely do the work, you can show the result on screen, and buyers repeatedly search for the same job. If one of these is missing, the category's popularity will not save you. Prepare the sample with the portfolio case-study structure; do not present concept work as a real client order.
How do you create a Gig on Fiverr?
- Overview: complete "I will" with the specific service, choose the right category and subcategory, and add relevant search tags.
- Scope & Pricing: choose a single price or three packages; show the delivery time, revision count, price and included work in each package.
- Description & FAQ: clarify who it is for, what you deliver, the process, the boundaries and the most common objections.
- Requirements: ask the client for the files, dimensions, access, text and decisions needed to start the work.
- Gallery: add visuals showing your own work samples and the service's outcome.
- Verification & Publish: complete the required account, phone, identity and business verification and submit the Gig for review.
According to the Gig creation document dated 30 July 2026, a new freelancer can keep 4 active Gigs at a time; the limit is 10 for Level 1 and Level 2, and 30 for Top Rated. The Gig title creates the URL, but changing the title later does not change that URL. The category cannot be changed after publishing, so mind the first choice.
The same document allows up to three packages — Basic, Standard and Premium — at least one revision option per package, a description of up to 1,200 characters, 10 FAQs, and at least one and up to three images. Some categories may have standard package requirements and higher minimum prices; the terms on the creation screen override the general guide.
How should you price the Basic, Standard and Premium packages?
Three packages must not be the same work as "cheap, medium, expensive." The difference should be visible at the buyer's need level: number of deliverables, depth, format, speed, interim stages and usage rights.
| Package | Example scope | Who is it for? |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | One core deliverable, standard timeframe, limited revisions | A buyer with a narrow, clear need |
| Standard | An extra variant or format, an interim check, wider scope | A buyer wanting options and adaptation in delivery |
| Premium | The full package, priority timing or a broad usage set | A buyer wanting more coordination and deliverables |
Fiverr's package explanation emphasises that the price, included elements, revisions and extra options help the buyer and freelancer understand the scope the same way from the start. Even so, writing "unlimited revisions" is not a quality signal; without acceptance criteria it can create an endless change loop.
The 5-dollar minimum is not the right price for every service. Delivery time, sales and correspondence, revisions, tools, Fiverr's share, withdrawal, currency and tax must be calculated together. Check the package number against the freelance pricing model, then price Extra Fast Delivery and additional deliverables separately.
Why are Requirements and the Gig gallery part of the sale?
The Requirements form is not an administrative add-on. It is the minimum input package for the order to start correctly. A good question also shows the expected answer format:
- the goal and where the material will be used;
- the target audience and the core message;
- the dimensions, format, language and technical requirements;
- where the existing brand files, access and sources are;
- examples of liked and disliked work;
- who makes decisions and how changes are approved.
Do not collect passwords, card details or sensitive documents the work does not need. On projects requiring access, minimum permissions, temporary accounts and closing access when the work ends are safer.
The gallery image should show the package's outcome at a glance. Do not use templates that are not yours, stock visuals or someone else's results as a portfolio. Fiverr's current rule requires at least one image; in the Video & Animation category a 20–60 second video is mandatory, in other categories it is optional. If you prepare visuals with AI, check the authorship and usefulness boundary separately in the AI earnings guide.
How do you manage orders, revisions and delivery?
- Read the client's requirements answers; do not start blindly if critical information is missing.
- Confirm the scope, deadline, package and extras on the order page.
- Write down the first step and when the next update will come.
- On long projects, verify the direction early with a draft or interim result.
- Send the final file only through the Deliver Now flow, with a delivery note explaining what was provided.
- When a revision arrives, separate whether it belongs to the package's scope; formalise new work with a custom offer or an extra.
Under Fiverr's current order flow, the work process begins when the client submits their requirements. After the order moves to Delivered status, the buyer has 3 days to accept, request a revision or take extra review time; with no action, the order completes automatically. For Gigs requiring physical delivery, auto-completion is 14 days.
Writing "it's ready" in a message is not an official delivery. Likewise, sending unfinished work as final just to hold the deadline risks client trust and your account metrics. As soon as a delay looks likely, propose a deadline extension with the reason and a new date.
Fiverr earnings, safety and the first 30 days
According to Fiverr's Earnings page, the freelancer is credited 80 percent of the purchase amount for every completed order, Gig Extra and tip. From a 100-dollar order, 80 dollars remain after the platform's share; this figure does not include withdrawal, currency, tools, subcontractors, tax and the time you spent.
The official freelancer guide states funds usually become available for withdrawal after a 14-day clearing period, which can be shorter in the eligible Top Rated and Fiverr Pro programmes. Plan your cash flow by the date the money is usable in your bank, not by the "order completed" date. Check the current withdrawal methods in the guide to receiving payments from abroad.
Fiverr's off-platform policy requires communication and transactions to stay on the platform; third-party communication is possible only after an order is placed and under certain conditions, and important decisions must be documented on the order page. Do not agree to demands for personal data, passwords, cards, unknown links, QR codes or remote device control.
| Days | Work | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 | Prepare one narrow Gig, three packages, requirements and two proofs | The scope is understood at a glance |
| 6–10 | Finish the title, tags, description, FAQ and gallery | The search and comparison language fits |
| 11–17 | Publish the Gig, share the profile and service link in relevant networks | Impressions, clicks and messages tracked separately |
| 18–24 | Change only one variable: the first visual, title or package | The before/after date is visible |
| 25–30 | Analyse message questions, orders, revisions and net earnings | There is a keep, change or stop decision |
No sales in the first 30 days is not a verdict by itself. If there are no impressions, check the category, tags and demand; impressions but no clicks — the first visual and title; clicks but no messages/orders — the packages, proof and price. If Fiverr does not suit you, compare the other income models against the same time and risk criteria.
Frequently asked questions about Fiverr
What is Fiverr and how does it work?
Fiverr is a marketplace where the freelancer creates a service storefront called a Gig. The client finds the Gig via search, chooses a package, submits requirements and the order starts. The freelancer delivers on the order page, the buyer accepts or requests revisions, and the platform's share is deducted from the completed payment. The whole process is documented on the platform.
What percentage does Fiverr charge?
According to the Fiverr Help Center document dated 30 July 2026, the freelancer earns 80 percent of the completed order, Gig Extra and tip amounts; in other words, the platform's share is 20 percent. For net earnings, calculate bank withdrawal, currency conversion, software, subcontracting, tax and hours spent separately.
Is opening a Gig on Fiverr free?
No separate upfront listing fee for a Fiverr account and Gig appears in this official flow, but the platform's share is deducted from completed orders. Advertising and other paid features can create separate costs. Be sure to re-read the current prices and terms visible in your account on the day you register.
Is it important to create three packages for the first Gig?
No. Fiverr lets you choose one fixed price or three packages; some standardised categories may have special minimum requirements. Three packages are useful only if the scope, deliverables, timeframe and buyer needs genuinely differ. Splitting the same work into three prices creates confusion and looks weak.
When does Fiverr complete an order automatically?
After Delivered status, the buyer's standard review window is 3 days. In that time they can accept the work, request revisions or extend the period. With no reaction, the platform moves the order to Complete status itself. For services shipping a physical product, the waiting window is 14 days.
A good Gig is not a slogan that attracts buyers; it is a pre-contract framework that also stops the wrong orders. When what you do not deliver is as clear as what you do, the work after the sale becomes calmer, more measurable and more repeatable.
