Salary Negotiation: How to Defend Your Value
Salary negotiation: tactics for proving your value, choosing the right timing and conversation scripts — the professional way to ask for a raise.

To ask for a raise, present — calmly and with verifiable facts — how your role has grown, which results you have created, the market signals and the specific amount you expect, rather than your personal need.
"I work a lot" may be true, but it is incomplete for a decision. What work do you do differently than before? What has changed for the company?
Why does your current salary no longer match your responsibility's level? The meeting's power comes from the answers to those questions.
A salary conversation is not a self-praise contest. Nor is the goal cornering the manager. You are reopening one term of the employment relationship for discussion; so the proof, the amount, the timing and the step after agreement must be clear.
Which basis for a raise is most convincing?
Inflation, rent and family expenses are real pressures. But an employer's salary decision usually rests on the role's value, the internal pay system, the budget, the employee's proof and the cost of replacing them. So there is no need to hide personal need — but leaning on it as the main argument is a weak position.
| Basis | Strong proof | Weak presentation |
|---|---|---|
| The role has grown | New responsibilities, decision scope, team or risk | "My workload has increased" |
| Results were created | A verifiable change in revenue, cost, time, quality or risk | Unsourced percentages and generic adjectives |
| The level has changed | Managing more complex work with less supervision | Pointing only to tenure |
| A market gap exists | Several current signals for the same role, city, sector and level | The highest number from a single listing |
| Internal alignment is broken | The gap between the official title, job function and actual work | Rumours about a colleague's salary |
Do not write a result entirely in your own name. If it was team work, show your own contribution separately: which decision did you make, which part did you execute, and how was the result measured? A claim like "I increased sales 30 percent" can lose trust in the meeting if it hides the combined effect of analytics, pricing, the product, advertising and the sales team.
When is the right time for the salary conversation?
The best time is not only year's end. It makes sense to request the meeting when your role has grown significantly, when a probation or agreed review period ends, when a measurable result is completed and before the next budget decision.
Blurting a figure the day after a big win can also be weak. Tell the manager the topic in advance so they can check the budget, the role's level and the approval process. Instead of "let's talk for 15 minutes," state the meeting's purpose openly.
If the company has layoffs, a frozen budget or a serious cash-flow problem, the raise's likelihood may be low. That does not mean never raising the topic. Simply bring into the discussion, alongside the amount, the decision date, the role's level and the concrete conditions the raise depends on.
How should the market salary range be calculated?
The national average wage is not your role's market price. In the State Statistics Committee's labour market data, wages vary by economic activity, sector and period. The average gives a general direction, but it does not show the position's level, company size, language requirements or result responsibility separately.
Build the market range from three sources:
- Save current vacancies showing salaries in the same city, field and level.
- Ask two trusted recruiters or field leads for the role's range.
- If your company has role tiers and salary bands, learn the official criteria.
Suppose five fitting listings show 1,500, 1,700, 1,800, 2,000 and 2,400 AZN. Simply taking 2,400 is not correct. Match the job descriptions, required experience, bonuses, insurance, remote work and other payments. If the three fitting signals sit at 1,700–2,000, tie the figure in the negotiation to that range through your own role and proof.
To gather current listings you can use the comparison of job listing sites, and to see how titles and levels are written in the market, the LinkedIn profile map. A listing's salary is not a final offer or your automatic entitlement; it is only one market signal.
How do you prepare a one-page raise package?
Bringing a long presentation to the meeting is not mandatory. A one-page note both organises your thinking and makes it easier for the manager to justify the decision upwards.
| Section | Information to write | Maximum length |
|---|---|---|
| Current role | The official title and core responsibility | 2 lines |
| Grown scope | Work, decisions and risk added since the last review | 3 bullets |
| Results | 2–3 changes with visible sources and your share | 3 bullets |
| Market signals | A summary of fitting listings and role ranges | 3 sources |
| The specific request | The new monthly gross salary and effective date | 1 sentence |
| The alternative path | If not possible: criteria, dates and the next review | 1 sentence |
Clarify whether the figure you state is gross or net. Bonuses, health insurance, extra leave, a training budget and remote work can be part of the total package, but they must not be equated with the base salary. A one-off bonus is not a raise to the monthly base.
When preparing the result proof, protect the same factual precision as in a CV. The dates, roles, tools and measures must not conflict. Use the CV fact package method to write results briefly, and the portfolio guide to choose a visible work sample.
What can you say in the salary conversation?
Keep the conversation in five parts: the purpose, the changed role, the proof, the specific request and the manager's response. Do not memorise a speech; rehearse the sequence of meaning.
"I would like us to review my salary and role level. Over the past nine months, alongside the monthly report, I have also managed the planning of two teams and the onboarding of a new employee.
The report's preparation time has dropped from two days to six hours; that can be verified against the last six months' delivery records. Based on my current role and the market range I have seen, I would like to discuss raising my monthly gross salary to 1,800 AZN, with the change taking effect from the start of next month. What information is missing for this decision?"
The figure in this example is not a market norm. Replace it with your own amount, grounded in your role, proof and the company's system. The last sentence matters too: after stating the request, do not fill the silence with extra words. Listen to the other side's answer and turn vague phrasing into specifics.
To a "we'll see later," ask "By what date?", "What needs to change?" and "Who approves the decision?" Staying calm is not agreeing; it is converting the issue into measurable terms.
How do you answer "there's no budget" and other objections?
| Response | Clarifying question | The written next step |
|---|---|---|
| There is no budget right now | When is the next budget review? | A date, an amount and a review meeting |
| You are not ready yet | Which 2–3 criteria are missing? | Criteria, proof and a review period |
| Everyone's workload has grown | By what framework is my role level assessed? | The job description and tier expectations |
| Only a bonus is possible | What are the bonus's conditions and calculation? | Recording the one-off payment separately from the base salary |
| A smaller raise is offered | When, and under what conditions, can the remaining gap close? | The staged raise's amounts and dates |
Accept an alternative concession only if it has real value for you. Taking on open-ended extra responsibility in exchange for "no raise now, but we'll see in future" is not a healthy agreement. A new title alone, without authority, a job description and a compensation path, does not count as a raise either.
The employer's answer will not always be "yes." Nor are you obliged to threaten resignation immediately. Once the decision, the criteria and the date are clear, you can make a better-informed choice between staying, seeking a new role or closing a skills gap.
How should a raise agreement be formalised?
A verbal "we'll sort it out" is not a payment term. After the meeting, summarise by email the new amount, whether it is gross or net, the effective date, bonuses and other conditions. If no decision was made, write down the required criteria and the next review day.
Article 43 of the Azerbaijani Labour Code, in its official text, lists the salary and its supplements among the employment contract's essential terms; the same article states that, unless otherwise provided, the contract's terms cannot be changed unilaterally. Article 154 defines the salary as the sum of the amount set by the employment contract, supplements, bonuses and other payments.
This legal information is a general explanation, not individual legal advice. The agreed change must be correctly reflected in the employment contract and the relevant electronic system. If there is a gap between the amount, the date or the paperwork, request a written correction from human resources, and in a concrete dispute consult a labour law specialist.
Acas's pay rise guide likewise presents the employee stating their reasons and confirming what was discussed in writing as practical steps. The legal timeframes there are United Kingdom rules; they should not be applied directly to an Azerbaijani contract.
This article covers an employee's salary conversation. For someone selling services to clients, the income target, billable hours, scope, platform share and usage rights are calculated separately; use that model in the guide to pricing a freelance service.
Questions about asking for a raise
How much of a raise should you ask for?
There is no universal percentage. Compare your current salary with the role's grown responsibility, several market signals at the same level, the company's position bands and the total compensation. State a specific monthly gross amount and be ready to explain in one sentence the proof behind that figure.
Can you ask for a raise by email?
Email suits announcing the meeting's purpose in advance and keeping the outcome in writing. Hold the main discussion, where possible, in a live or video meeting. Then confirm the amount, effective date, extra payments and the next review terms with a clear written summary after the conversation, sent to the relevant people.
What should I do if the company says there is no budget?
Ask when the budget reopens, who makes the decision and which criteria for a raise are unmet. Fix the next meeting's date in writing. If an interim bonus, staged raise or another concession is offered, assess separately how it differs from the base salary and its real value to you.
Should another job offer be used for a raise?
Bring the offer into the negotiation only if it is real and you are prepared to accept it. A fake offer or a bluff destroys trust. If you receive a counter-offer, weigh not only the amount but the role's rationale, the leadership relationship, growth opportunities and why the raise was not given before. Do not use a threat if you are not ready to leave.
How many results are enough to show for a raise?
Instead of a long list, choose two or three verifiable examples directly tied to your role. In each, show the situation, your specific contribution and the visible change's source. Do not write a team result fully in your own name; without a number, explain the observed difference in time, quality, risk and responsibility.
