n8n, Make and Zapier: A No-Code Automation Comparison
Comparing n8n, Make and Zapier: capabilities, pricing, learning curves and which team each suits. A selection guide for no-code automation platforms.

n8n is a workflow platform that lets a technical team build complex, customisable automations with a visual flow, using code and their own server when needed. The short answer to "what is n8n": an automation construction kit you build by your own rules.
Make and Zapier also connect applications, but the three products' billing units, management burden and strengths are not the same. That is why "which tool is best?" has no universal answer. The winner chosen for a simple connection can become the most expensive mistake in a team working with custom APIs and sensitive data.
The process must be written down first. If decisions and exceptions still vary from employee to employee, the process map comes before tool selection. This comparison exists to run the same real scenario on all three platforms and separate the advertised price from the full cost.
What is the core difference between n8n, Make and Zapier?

The phrase "no-code" is also a little misleading. A simple flow can be built without code, but field mapping, API limits, duplicates, time zones, retries and data rights remain technical decisions. Dragging menus is easy. Guaranteeing that a wrong order is not created twice is different work.
Why does the billing unit matter more than the price?
On 30 July 2026, n8n's official pricing page bills Cloud plans by full workflow executions per month and does not count steps separately. In the annual view, Starter shows 20 euros a month for 2,500 executions and Pro 50 euros for 10,000. These are dated reference figures; reopen the price and tax terms on the day you buy.
On the Make pricing page, an ordinary module operation is mostly one credit. In the annual view, 10,000 credits are shown from 9 US dollars on Core, 16 on Pro and 29 on Teams; consumption can be dynamic for some AI and advanced features. Make's credits document explains ordinary app operations separately from AI consumption tied to tokens and other factors.
The Zapier pricing page shows the Professional plan from 19.99 and the Team plan from 69 US dollars on annual billing. The chosen task tier changes the final price. Under the official measurement rules updated 21 July 2026, triggers are not counted and each successful action is usually one task; some AI, code, Lead Router and MCP uses have different multipliers.

This table is not a price quote. Loops, searches, repeated bundles, error recovery, AI steps and sub-flow accounting can change it. Calculating monthly costs from a marketing page without reading one execution of your own scenario in the history is not correct.
When should you choose n8n, Make or Zapier?
n8n: for control and customisation
If you need custom API connections, complex data transformation, code steps and running on your own infrastructure, n8n is a strong candidate. The official hosting document shows npm, Docker, Docker Compose and cloud options. That freedom does not mean free operations: updates, the database, TLS, backups, monitoring and incident response can become your work.
Presenting the self-hosted Community edition as "fully open source with unlimited commercial use" is also wrong. n8n's Sustainable Use License explanation permits internal business use but restricts uses like white-labelling n8n to customers and charging for access. In a scenario embedded into a product, check the licence separately.
Make: for seeing visual complexity
A team wanting to visually track branching, filters, data transformation and the links between many modules within one scenario may find Make comfortable. In return, it must understand credit consumption at the module and bundle level. A scenario can look tidy on the map, yet when thousands of items enter a loop, the bill can grow unexpectedly.
Zapier: for fast, broad ready-made connections
If the main need is quickly wiring one trigger and a few actions between well-known cloud apps, Zapier is a strong start. The official page shows more than 9,000 app integrations. Quantity is still not a selection criterion: the specific trigger, action, fields, premium status and frequency you use must be tested separately within the plan.
If you are choosing in order to write sales enquiries into a CRM, define the CRM data model first. For the reply and routing part, the sales AI scenarios, and for the support flow the human handover rules should be added to the tool comparison.
How do you test the three tools with the same scenario?
Choose one anonymised form example: accept the enquiry, validate the email, search the CRM, create if absent, notify the owner and log the result. On each platform, run three ordinary cases, one incomplete, one duplicate and one API error. What is compared is not the existence of a ready template but the sameness of the final result.

If the team's AI and automation readiness is weak, the most flexible product may not be the best choice. Who builds, who approves, who looks at the 2 a.m. error, and who can read the flow if that person leaves? The choice must answer these four questions as much as screen comfort.
How do you check servers, security and error recovery?
Self-hosted n8n can help control where the data lives, but it does not solve security automatically. The n8n security audit checks signals like unused credentials, risky nodes, unprotected webhooks, missing settings and old versions. The audit does not replace backup restoration and real incident response.
The Make error handling document shows that incomplete executions, retries, error passing and rollback behaviours are not the same. In Zapier, a failed action not being counted does not mean it is harmless for the business. Ask the same questions of all three: is a half-written record left behind, does re-execution create duplicates, who receives the alert and how is the previous state restored? If a chatbot joins the flow, the human handover must also enter this error plan.
Form, CRM, email and support data can carry personal data. A map of the purpose, legal basis or consent, minimum fields, access, retention, transfer and deletion must be prepared under Azerbaijan's Law "On Personal Data". A tool's server country is just one line; it does not show the whole data path.

In an illustrative calculation, if 500 manual operations a month take four minutes each, the load is 2,000 minutes — 33 hours 20 minutes. At an hourly contribution value of 15 AZN, the visible benefit is 500 AZN. If the first month's subscription and extra consumption are 35, building 6 hours × 25 AZN = 150, oversight 2 hours × 25 AZN = 50, and an incident reserve 20 AZN, the full cost is 255 AZN.
The net benefit is 245 AZN and the ROI is 245 / 255 × 100 = 96.1 percent. This is not a product price or a savings promise; it is an example. If error fixing, downtime, currency, tax, servers, backups, employee learning and future migration change, the result changes too. Use the AI ROI model for a broader calculation.
Frequently asked questions about n8n, Make and Zapier
What is n8n and who is it for?
n8n is an automation platform that combines applications, APIs and data steps into a visual workflow. It suits technical teams wanting custom logic through code and HTTP requests, and the option to run on their own server. For simple needs, the extra operational burden can erode its advantage. Server and technical responsibility must be assessed too.
Is n8n free?
n8n's self-hosted Community edition can be used without a subscription, but the server, backups, updates, security and technical labour are not free. The Sustainable Use License restricts some forms of commercial use. In a scenario offered to customers as a product, check the official terms. Having no subscription does not mean the costs are zero.
Is Make or Zapier easier?
For a simple trigger and ready-made app actions, Zapier can be learned faster; for branching visual data flows, Make can look clearer. That is a general tendency, not a verdict. Build the same test with your own apps, error cases and monthly volume. Record the build time and monthly consumption together.
Is n8n cheaper than Make?
Sometimes — but because step counts and execution counts are calculated differently, the headline plan price is not enough. n8n Cloud measures full workflow executions, while Make usually measures module operations. For self-hosted n8n, add the operational labour and infrastructure costs. Measure the same scenario on both platforms.
Are these tools suitable for building AI agents?
All three can plug AI services into a workflow, but giving the model broad write and send authority is dangerous. Keep AI agent authority minimal; write down the data sources, cost limits, human approval, operation logs and stop rules. Risky operations should run with approval, not automatically.
The choice should not be made because a name is famous. Build two strong candidates on the same six cases, read the real consumption from the history, create the error deliberately and test the exit. Whichever platform does this work correctly and recoverably with the least total burden is the right answer for you.
