SEO is the sum of technical, content and reputation work that makes a site easier for search engines to find and understand, and presents the most fitting, trustworthy answer to a person's query. The goal isn't simply "being first"; it's appearing for the right searches, bringing the fitting visitor to the page and turning that visit into a useful action for the business. The shortest answer to "what is SEO": the work that turns being found from chance into a system.
SEO is not the free version of advertising. You don't pay the platform per click, but research, authors, editing, technical development, measurement and patience remain as costs. Results don't arrive on order either. Google's own SEO starter guide openly says no secret automatically puts a site in first place.
A well-written page isn't enough. If Google can't find it, doesn't index it, or picks another URL as the main version, the answer won't be seen. If the page is visible but doesn't meet the search intent, technical cleanliness won't save it either. SEO is where those two worlds join.
What is SEO — and what isn't it?
SEO is the abbreviation of Search Engine Optimization. Google explains it as work that helps search engines understand content — and helps people find the site and decide whether to visit.

The day the ads stop, paid visibility usually stops too. A useful page built with SEO can keep being found afterwards. That's not a "write once, get traffic forever" promise. Queries change, competitors improve, products age and technical faults appear.

How does Google find, index and show a page?
Separate three stages: finding and reading, entering the index, and showing the fitting result at query time. That distinction is half of SEO diagnostics. The sentence "it's not on Google" can't simultaneously mean the page wasn't found, wasn't indexed, or simply wasn't chosen for that query.
1. Crawling: finding and reading the page
Googlebot can find a new URL from internal and external links, previously known URLs and the sitemap file. Google's crawling explainer describes this as an automated program discovering and trying to understand new pages. If access is blocked by robots.txt, the server is down or no link path exists, the first problem isn't the content.
2. Indexing: processing the main version and the content
Not every found URL enters the index. Google processes the content, the page's main topic, duplicates and the canonical URL it considers primary. If the same product creates five URLs through filters, parameters and print versions, which version is primary can blur. The canonical tag is a signal; it's not an excuse to leave duplicate production uncontrolled.
3. Serving: choosing the result for a query
Being in the index doesn't mean appearing for that query. The system selects results by relevance, quality, user context and numerous other signals. Google's minimum technical requirements list only three core conditions: Googlebot must not be blocked, the page must return HTTP 200, and it must carry indexable content. Those conditions give eligibility — not an index or position guarantee.

It's more useful to see SEO as four work areas, not three: technical accessibility, content and intent, on-site connections, and off-site trust. In local business, the address, categories and real reputation create a separate layer.

These directions don't compete. A magnificent article throwing 500 errors isn't seen. A fast site answering the topic superficially isn't chosen. A strong backlink bringing users to the wrong page creates no business result.
How are search intent and content strategy built?
Keyword analysis is not collecting word lists. Why does a person type that query, which answer format do they expect and what do they want to do after the answer? "What is a CRM" is an informational query.
"CRM pricing for small business" carries comparison and commercial intent. One page can answer both — half-heartedly.
Split intent into four practical groups
- Informational: learning the concept, the problem and the solution.
- Navigational: finding a specific brand, site or page.
- Comparison/commercial: checking the options, prices, advantages and risks.
- Transactional: buying, booking, downloading and inquiring.
Then turn the topic into a page map. One broad pillar holds the core concept; cluster articles deepen specific questions; the service page answers the decision intent. Instead of creating three weak articles for the same keyword, choose one primary URL and separate the other pages' roles.
Content marketing here is not SEO's production line but the customer's decision map. A question repeated on sales calls, an objection stalling contracts, a real calculation example and first-hand experience are worth more than the generic summaries already in the search results.
How is on-page SEO done?
On-page SEO is not placing a keyword in the title and waiting for a green light. The page's topic, its answer sequence and the next action must be clear to both the reader and the search engine.

The meta description is a summary helping the click decision in a fitting result; there's no guarantee it's shown the same way every time. Write it as a promise, not a keyword warehouse. The URL should be short, stable and topic-identifying. Use date and category structures if the business requires them, not for an SEO template's sake.
Internal linking doesn't end with an "other articles" list at the bottom. Give the link to the right page in the sentence where you explain the related concept. That answers the reader's next question and makes the site's topical structure visible.
What is checked in a technical SEO audit?
Technical SEO is not beautifying the code. It's removing obstacles so important pages are found, open with the right status, get chosen as the main URL, work on mobile and keep their content visible after rendering.
- Accessibility: core URLs return HTTP 200; Googlebot isn't blocked needlessly.
- Indexing: no accidental
noindexon important pages; duplicate and filter URLs are managed. - Canonical: your chosen main version doesn't conflict with internal links, the sitemap and redirects.
- Sitemap: only canonical, working URLs you want indexed are included.
- Redirects: deleted and moved URLs are redirected server-side to fitting new addresses; no chains and loops.

How do backlinks, authorship and trust affect SEO?
A backlink is a link from another site to your page. Not every link is equal. A topically fitting editorial reference, hundreds of artificial directory profiles and a paid, hidden anchor don't create the same trust.
"Earning" links mostly means creating something worth citing before asking for links: local data, an open method, a verified table, an expert explanation, a tool, an example or a position that clarifies a dispute. How is local SEO built for an Azerbaijani business?
Local SEO is not adding the word "Baku" to every headline. The business's real address, service area, categories, opening hours, phone number, reviews and the site's information must confirm each other. Google Maps and Business Profile don't end with opening a profile; changing information must be updated, user questions answered and fake reviews never collected.
Take a hypothetical Baku accounting firm. The homepage gives the general offer for "accounting services." Separate service pages answer the intent for payroll calculation, tax accounting and setup for new companies.
The address and contacts are identical on all main pages. Review requests go to customers who genuinely received the service, without dictating the outcome.
Creating 30 identical pages for district names is not a local strategy. If there's no distinct service, address, team, rules or proof for that area, renamed pages give users no new answer. One strong service page and a correct Business Profile are usually more honest than 30 empty doors.
How are SEO results measured?
Position is useful diagnostics, not a business result. The same page can appear differently by country, device, date and query. Split the report into three layers: visibility on Google, transitions to the site, useful actions after the site.

Search Console clicks and Analytics sessions should not match exactly. When choosing KPIs, don't write a position guarantee for the first 30 days. AEO describes visibility in answer systems, GEO in generative answers. That doesn't mean AI visibility is unimportant. Answer systems can split a query into sub-questions, pull passages from multiple sources and show clickable citations. That makes specific answers, first-hand experience, clear structure, reliable sources, good images and technical accessibility more valuable. But creating hundreds of similar pages separately under the AEO and GEO banner doesn't produce the right result.

Producing content with AI is not an automatic penalty. Google's guidance on generative AI content counts the tool as useful for research and structure while keeping the accuracy, quality and fit requirements. Creating many pages without extra value for users is a spam-policy risk.

Days 1–30: baseline and obstacles

- Extract the status, index, canonical, robots and sitemap state of important URLs.
- Map the existing pages against the services that earn the most revenue.
- Fix the riskiest 404s, 5xx errors, wrong noindex, duplicates and mobile problems.
- Store the measurement baseline with dates: queries, pages, clicks, fitting inquiries.
Days 31–60: intent and page quality
- Build a pillar, cluster and commercial page map for one service topic.
- Refresh the 4–8 most important pages with search intent, direct answers, proof and internal links.
- Add author, source, update and real-experience signals.

You don't pay Google for organic clicks. Research, writing, expert review, development, design, tools, link earning and measurement demand time and money.
Is reaching first place on Google possible?
A high position for a given query is possible; a guarantee is not. Results vary by competition, relevance, location, device and the search engine's changing evaluation. Don't tie the goal to a single position.
How many times should the keyword be used?
