They don't all carry the same weight. Fix the problem stopping indexing first, then the quality and trust losses.
Seeing a hundred red cells in an SEO audit is easy. The hard part is separating which one affects traffic and which is merely a recommendation. In this article I split every mistake into a "symptom, check, fix" sequence so the team works toward the real obstacle, not a green audit score.
How can SEO mistakes be prioritised?
Look at the mistake's consequence, not its appearance. If a page's description length isn't ideal but the URL isn't entering the index because of noindex, writing the description first is wasted time. The P0/P1/P2 split below isn't an immutable law for every site; it's a decision frame for building the work order.

First map the impact area with the technical SEO checklist: is the problem in one URL, in a template, or across the whole site? Instead of hand-fixing the same mistake on a hundred URLs, find the template creating it. Keep sample URLs from before and after the fix separately.
3 SEO mistakes in technical accessibility
1. An important page is unreachable for Googlebot
The symptom is simple: the page opens in the browser, but Google sees 4xx, 5xx, a login demand, a blocked CDN or an empty render. Per Google's minimum technical requirements, Googlebot must not be blocked, the page must return HTTP 200 and present indexable content. These conditions are the entry gate, not an index or position guarantee.
Check: open both the indexed version and the Live Test result in Search Console URL Inspection. Confirm the status of Googlebot's request in the server log and whether the main text exists in the rendered HTML. Fix: remove the wrong block, the server error and the access barrier; then retest the same URL.
2. robots.txt is used as a de-indexing tool
Disallow limits Googlebot's crawling of the page; it doesn't guarantee the URL will never appear in search results. If other pages link to that URL, Google can recognise the address without crawling the content. Google's robots.txt guide shows the fitting methods for removal from the index: noindex, password protection or deleting the page.
Check: write down the goal: do you want to reduce crawl load, or remove the URL from Search? Fix: if noindex will be used, Googlebot must be able to see that directive; blocking the page with robots.txt at the same time can prevent that reading.
3. The canonical, sitemap and internal links point to different URLs
The product page declares itself canonical, the sitemap presents the filtered URL, and internal links go to a third version. That gives Google three different preference signals. In Google's canonical documentation, redirects and rel="canonical" are shown as strong signals and the sitemap as a weaker one; the methods must not contradict each other.
Check: compare the Google-selected canonical with the user-declared canonical in Search Console. Fix: choose the true primary URL, include it in the sitemap, point internal links to it and apply a permanent redirect where fitting for removed duplicates.

4. One page carries conflicting intents
"What is SEO?", "SEO pricing" and "SEO agency" belong to the same topic family, but the answer the user expects is not the same. Stuffing a definition page with a sales pitch, or turning a service page into a three-thousand-word glossary, can weaken both intents. In keyword analysis, first split the query into informational, comparison or transactional intent, then choose the fitting URL type.
Check: select the query in Search Console and look at which URLs alternate in the Pages section. Fix: if the pages' purposes are truly identical, merge them; if they differ, separate the headline, introduction, internal links and CTA to fit each intent.
5. The title and text get stuffed with keywords
Repeating the same phrase three times in the title, in every H2 and with artificial suffixes across paragraphs doesn't create relevance. Google's title link guide recommends descriptive, concise, page-specific titles; it counts repetitive boilerplate titles and keyword stuffing as useless. The spam policy also lists unnatural repetition as keyword stuffing.
Check: read the title and H1 apart from the results page: does the user understand the topic and the difference without opening the URL? Fix: keep the core phrase natural and use the remaining space for the outcome, the audience or a differentiating detail. Google can still rewrite the title link; your text is the source, not an instruction.
6. Mass, near-identical AI articles get published
The mistake isn't using AI; it's creating hundreds of pages without editorial review, original evidence and real usefulness. Google's AI content guidance demands accuracy, quality and fit. The scaled content abuse policy counts mass, worthless pages made to manipulate rankings as a risk regardless of how they were produced.
Check: pick ten articles at random and lay the introductions, H2 flows, examples and conclusions side by side. If the same idea repeats with only the keyword changed, the problem is at scale. Fix: don't publish a page without a direct answer, primary sources, expert judgment, local examples and separate editorial approval; change the date only on genuine updates.

7. An important page stays orphaned, or the link hangs on a JavaScript event
Being in the sitemap doesn't fully substitute for internal links. Google uses links to find new pages and understand relationships between them. The official link guide shows the <a href="..."> structure for reliably crawlable links; an onclick event alone is not a reliable choice.
Check: count how many content URLs link to the core service and revenue pages. The anchor text should explain the target's topic, not say "click here." Fix: give contextual links from related hubs, categories and articles; don't mechanically repeat the same anchor on every page.
8. Backlink count is put above quality
A "500 dofollow links" package looks fast, but if the source has no topical fit and no editorial reason, the count itself proves no value. Google's link spam policy lists paid rank-passing links, excessive exchanges, automated links and low-quality directories as examples. A sponsored link isn't banned per se; it must be marked with the fitting rel="sponsored" or nofollow.
Check: in a backlink audit, read the link's context, the target URL, the anchor text and how it was acquired before the domain count. Fix: create data, research, tools, real expert commentary and media value; don't buy risk with manipulative packages.

9. Structured data doesn't match the visible content
No FAQ is visible, but FAQPage sits in the code; there are no product reviews, but AggregateRating was added. Google's structured data policies, updated on 10 July 2026, require the markup to represent the page's real main content. Even correct code guarantees no rich result, while wrong and misleading markup can lose eligibility.
Check: test the syntax with the Rich Results Test, then check the page with human eyes. Fix: mark up only data that Google supports, that genuinely belongs to the page and that is visible; don't create invisible ratings or fake reviews in code.
10. "100 points" is confused with good user experience
The Lighthouse score is good, yet on the mobile screen the text is covered by an ad, a popup blocks the main content and the user can't finish the form. Google's page experience documentation says there's no single signal, and a good Core Web Vitals result guarantees no high position. The goal isn't a tool score but a fast, unobstructed page in real use.
Check: complete the core task yourself on a mobile device, then look at the real user data in the Search Console Core Web Vitals report. Fix: fix LCP, INP and CLS problems by URL group, but don't try to cover weak content with a performance score.

11. Success is measured by average position alone
Average position is an aggregated number varying by device, country, query and result appearance. Search Console's Performance use cases documentation recommends focusing on click and impression trends more than position. For the business, fitting inquiries, sales and revenue must join those.
Check: compare the page, query, country and device segments over the same date range. Fix: keep technical health, visibility, click quality and conversion in separate columns. The sentence "position rose" doesn't bring the business result with it.
12. Fixes are made without an impact area and a prior baseline
Changing all the titles on the same day and then looking at total traffic loses the cause. The Search Console URL Inspection tool separates the version Google holds in the index from the live version; even a "URL is on Google" result guarantees no actual display. Before a change, the sample URLs, the date, the expected effect and the rollback plan must be written.
Check: if the problem is in one URL choose Live Test, if in a template choose Page indexing and the URL group, if in performance choose a comparative date range. Fix: release changes in logical groups, record them and compare with the same metric. Don't attribute seasonality and parallel campaigns to the result.
A 30-day fix plan for SEO mistakes
- Days 1–3: extract the P0 list from Search Console, the server log, the sitemap and the main templates. Write the number of affected URLs for each problem.
- Days 4–10: fix the 5xx errors, blocks, wrong
noindex, canonical and redirect contradictions. Verify at least two URLs from each template with Live Test. - Days 11–20: edit the intent, title, content, internal-link and schema problems on the pages with the most impressions and business value. Merge, rewrite or de-index the mass weak content.
- Days 21–30: check the mobile user scenario, the Core Web Vitals groups, the link risk and the measurement panel. Record the changes and set the next 28-day comparison date.
The goal at the month's end isn't to say "12 mistakes closed." It's building a system where Google finds the important pages without problems, the user gets a fitting answer and the team can see the link between change and result. Can a page be removed from Google with robots.txt?
