Shopify Guide: Setup, Payments, Themes
A Shopify guide: setup, choosing a theme, payment systems and using it from Azerbaijan — a step-by-step explanation of getting the store running.

Shopify is a subscription-based e-commerce platform that unifies the product catalogue, online storefront, orders and store administration in one panel. The shortest answer to "what is Shopify": a platform that turns the store's technical side into a subscription.
You do not need to set up a server or write the store's core software from scratch. Instead, you work within the platform's plans, payment options, theme structure and app ecosystem.
Shopify can make opening a store easier. It does not decide for you what to sell, whether an order makes you money, or through which legal-technical route you will accept card payments in Azerbaijan.
If you have not yet reached platform choice, first define the online store's business, legal and operational foundation. Shopify can carry that plan; it is not a substitute for it.
The short decision
- Shopify is an e-commerce platform; it is not a business model or a local payment provider.
- Shopify's built-in card payments are not available for a business registered in Azerbaijan.
- Choose the theme by the product and decision scenario, not by the look.
- Before adding an app, look at local functionality, privacy, speed and the monthly cost.
- Make the launch decision after a full test order, a refund and a data export.
What does Shopify do — and not do?
According to Shopify's official overview, the platform gives a unified base for managing the online store, products, orders, themes, apps, sales channels and payments. The concept of e-commerce is broader; Shopify is one of the platforms for building that activity.
| What the platform provides | What the business must solve |
|---|---|
| Product and variant fields | Correct product facts, price, stock and margin |
| The storefront and theme system | The buyer's decision path and brand language |
| The cart and order records | The payment provider and legal compliance |
| Stock and fulfilment status | The real warehouse, courier and return path |
| Reporting and app connections | Metrics, owners and decision rules |
Dropshipping is not a Shopify feature; it is a fulfilment model. And Instagram is a sales channel. Both can connect to Shopify, but the platform does not automatically fix a weak supplier, wrong stock or a messy messaging process.
Who is Shopify right for?
Shopify can suit a team that wants to build a catalogue and order flow without dealing with server maintenance, extending standard functionality with existing themes and apps. If the product and process are not highly custom, it can shorten time to market.
It is a good candidate when:
- the product, variant, price and stock data is already defined;
- the team can carry the subscription and app costs continuously;
- your payment provider's Shopify integration is confirmed;
- the standard cart and order logic fits the business;
- working within theme and app boundaries is acceptable;
- data export and leaving the platform are planned in advance.
If highly custom price calculation, heavy B2B approval stages, deep integration with local systems, or a payment route absent from Shopify is your core requirement, custom development costs can grow. In that case compare the ready platform with other solutions on the same real order scenario.
In what sequence is a Shopify store built?
The official getting-started guide lists the first product, theme and domain as the main steps. A practical setup should also bring the payment and delivery exceptions to the launch's start.
- Define the sales model, market, currency, products and order margin.
- Write the store name, legal owner, address, time zone and notification email.
- Add the SKU, product names, descriptions, media, variants, weight, prices and stock.
- Test the collections, menus, search and filter structure with the real catalogue.
- Connect your own domain and choose the primary domain.
- Prepare the contact, delivery, returns, privacy and terms-of-sale pages.
- Check the payment provider, currency, failed payments and refunds.
- Build the delivery zones, tariffs, free-delivery threshold, weight rules and return path.
- Test the theme with real products, on mobile screens, keyboards and weak networks.
- Check analytics, search appearance, order notifications, roles and the backup process.
Minimum data on the product card
The Shopify products document covers managing descriptions, media, variants, stock, tags and metafields beyond the title and price. Do not copy the product description from the manufacturer verbatim; verify and write the dimensions, materials, usage limits, box contents, warranty, delivery and returns facts.
Keep the SKU as a fixed internal code. Instead of multiplying the same colour and size as separate products, use the real variant structure. If stock lives in another system, define the update frequency and which is the source of truth when the two systems conflict.
How do you set up Shopify payments in Azerbaijan?
As of 30 July 2026, Azerbaijan is not on the list of countries supported by Shopify Payments. Having a company and a bank account abroad does not automatically create eligibility either; the business, identity, address, category and bank requirements of the country you use apply.
A store in Azerbaijan needs a third-party provider or a suitable manual payment route. Shopify recommends checking provider availability by country on the official payments page. Do not treat a provider not on the list as a ready Shopify integration merely because it has an API.
8 checks before choosing the provider
- Is it visible in the Shopify admin for the store's legal country?
- Is it a direct payment, or is the buyer redirected to an external page?
- Does it support AZN and the cards your target customers use?
- What are the Shopify and provider commissions combined?
- How do success, failure, duplicate and delayed notifications arrive?
- Do full and partial refunds work from the admin panel?
- How are the order, the payment and the bank transfer reconciled?
- Is the legal entity and its licence in the current local register?
The Shopify third-party payments document notes that an extra Shopify transaction fee can apply with these providers. Check the percentage by plan and country on the current pricing page. When comparing payment systems, count this as a cost separate from the provider's commission.
Verify the local payment institution's legal name and licence in the Central Bank of Azerbaijan's register. Do not collect card data in your own form or in messages; use the provider's protected page and enable server notifications.
The local legal framework
Shopify is a foreign platform, but it does not remove the local obligations of selling in Azerbaijan. Clarify registration, the TIN, the tax regime and reporting with an accountant using the State Tax Service's current guide. In line with the Law "On Electronic Commerce", make the seller name, address, contact, TIN, product facts, final price, delivery, payment and withdrawal terms visible before the order.
The customer's name, phone, address, order and payment records are processed in the platform and apps. Assess the purpose, legal basis or consent, minimum volume, access, retention, transfer to foreign services and deletion under the Law "On Personal Data". An app's convenience is not a basis for handing it all your customer data.
How do you choose Shopify themes and apps?
The theme is packaging, not the store itself. First write the real catalogue, product page, menu, filters, cart and mobile order scenario. Then choose the simplest theme that does that work without extra code.
Under the Shopify theme guide, a paid theme can be tried with your real products before buying; the purchase is final and the licence belongs to the original store. Trying a free theme first helps you see the functionality gaps rather than the look.
| Check | Question | Acceptance criterion |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile product | Are the price, variant and button clear? | The core decision is visible without extra taps |
| Catalogue | How does the customer find the product? | Menu, search and filters work with the real range |
| Accessibility | Are the keyboard, contrast and alt text right? | The core buying path completes without barriers |
| Speed | How much load do video, animation and apps create? | The addition's benefit exceeds its measured load |
| Support | Who answers for updates and breakage? | The owner, timeframe and cost are written down |
Shopify's accessibility guide separately requires contrast, consistent headings, alternative text for images and keyboard focus. These are not additions to aesthetics; they are part of the ability to see the product and complete the order.
Speed is most affected by the theme, apps and third-party code. The official performance guide recommends an updated theme, few sections, properly sized images and a benefit-versus-load comparison for apps. Removing an app does not always fully clean its theme code; create a theme copy before changing the live version.
How is Shopify's real cost calculated?
The monthly plan price is not the full cost. The theme, apps, domain, third-party transaction fees, the payment provider, currency conversion, development, support and operating time remain separate.
| Illustrative monthly cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| An assumed amount for the platform plan | 45 USD |
| Two apps | 18 USD |
| The monthly share of the theme purchase | 12 USD |
| The monthly share of the domain and extras | 5 USD |
| A technical support reserve | 30 USD |
| Fixed monthly total | 110 USD |
45 + 18 + 12 + 5 + 30 = 110 USD. This is not Shopify's current price offer; it is an example of how to add up the cost. On top come the order-dependent provider commission, the Shopify third-party fee, delivery, returns and customer acquisition costs.
Assess the data's exit too: test in what format the products, customers, orders, discounts, images, content, theme and app data export. Looking at the export button for the first time when you decide to leave the platform is too late.
What must be checked before launch?
The Shopify test orders document lets you check transactions in test mode. A successful order alone is not enough.
- product discovery, variants and the cart on mobile and desktop;
- successful, declined and abandoned payments;
- the last item in stock and two simultaneous orders;
- discounts, delivery tariffs and the final amount;
- the order email, admin notification and the spam folder;
- full and partial refunds;
- cancellation, returns and restocking;
- handover to the courier, tracking and failed delivery;
- analytics and ad events counted exactly once;
- exporting the product, order and customer data.
Activate the delivery system with real tariffs and the return path, and the marketing only after the test events are cleaned. Pointing ads at a store with lingering payment and stock errors makes the technical problem more expensive.
If you prepare the product pages with artificial intelligence (AI), keep the fact source and human approval. Google's generative AI guidance does not ban the tool; creating many similar pages without user value can create problems under the spam policy.
The minimum for search visibility
Following Google's e-commerce site structure guidance, make products reachable through the menu, categories and ordinary internal links. Keep collection and product URLs stable, write titles and descriptions matching the page's facts, and give images meaningful alternative text. Submit the XML sitemap to Search Console; remember indexing and ranking are not the same. Test the structured data generated by the theme and apps on the live page.
Frequently asked questions about Shopify
Is Shopify free?
No. Trial and campaign terms can change, but a working store requires a paid plan. To the full budget, add the domain, theme, apps, payment and transaction fees, development, support, delivery and returns costs alongside the plan. Check the current price on the official page on decision day.
Does Shopify Payments work in Azerbaijan?
The current official list does not show Shopify's built-in payment solution for Azerbaijan. So you must choose an available third-party provider for the country or a suitable manual payment. Before activating, check the real integration, AZN support, all commissions, refunds and the local licence together.
Do you need a developer for Shopify?
A first store with a simple catalogue and a ready theme can be built without writing code. Custom payments, ERP, couriers, pricing rules, multilingual content and theme changes may require development work. Define the need first with a real order scenario, then bring in a specialist.
Is a free theme enough?
For many stores, a maintained free theme is a good start. The decision depends less on looks than on the catalogue, variants, filters, mobile ordering, accessibility, speed and support requirements. Do not buy a paid theme without testing it with real products and the order path; note the purchase is non-refundable and the licence is tied to the store.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Shopify gives the technical base for an indexable store, but no ranking guarantee. Original product facts, a clear category structure, internal links, correct titles, useful content, speed, the mobile experience and trust information are still your work. Unnecessary apps and duplicated descriptions can weaken the visibility.
Conclusion: do not choose the platform before the payment
Shopify can provide a fast, manageable store foundation. For Azerbaijan, the decision's most sensitive point is often not the theme but the real payment integration and its total cost.
First test one product, one payment, one delivery and one return path end to end. If that path works, add themes and apps. If it does not, a prettier storefront only displays the problem more neatly.
