Getting Your First Order on Upwork: Profile, Proposals, Pricing
Getting your first order on Upwork: profile optimisation, how to write proposals and pricing strategy — including the mistakes beginners make most often.

Upwork is a work platform that brings freelancers and clients together: the freelancer creates a profile, spends Connects to submit proposals to relevant projects, the parties agree on terms, the contract starts on the platform, and payment is handled under that contract's rules. The answer to "how does Upwork work" hides in every step of this cycle.
The first order comes not from a "beautiful" profile but from four things fitting together: a narrow service, proof related to that service, the right listing and a proposal written to that listing's problem. If one of these is missing, more applications usually just mean more Connects spent.
This guide shows the practical path from opening a profile to a contract. Because Upwork's fees, Connects requirements, features and protection terms can change, the numbers and rules here were checked against the official Help Center documents on 30 July 2026; re-read the current terms on screen on the day you submit a proposal.
How does Upwork work?
- The freelancer opens an account and submits identity and profile information.
- They search listings matching their service and check the client's information.
- They spend the number of Connects shown for the listing and submit a proposal with terms, a timeframe and a work sample.
- The client messages and interviews suitable candidates within Upwork.
- An hourly or fixed-price offer becomes a contract on the platform.
- The work is delivered via time tracking or milestones under the agreed rules.
- The client pays, Upwork deducts the current service fee, and the remaining funds can be withdrawn after the security period.
Upwork's official getting-started explanation also lays out the path as profile, job search, proposal, contract and on-platform delivery. The platform provides the infrastructure to find clients, document agreements and manage payment; it does not make the skill, fit and sales decisions for you.
Upwork is not an employer, and profile approval creates no order guarantee. First determine whether the freelance model suits you, then which risks the platform reduces within that model. If you are looking for a stable employment relationship, also compare the choice with the remote work model.
The profile must not be an "I do everything" page
The main problem of a profile with no first order is the lack of reviews, but covering that with a broad service list makes things worse. In a few seconds, the client looks for answers to three questions: does this person understand my job, what proves they can do it, and what is the next step?
| Profile section | What to write | Weak version |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | Service + buyer or result | Expert, guru, a list from every field |
| First lines | The specific situation you solve | A long personal introduction |
| Portfolio | Context, role, decisions, delivery and limitations | An unexplained image gallery |
| Work history | Responsibilities relevant to the service and verifiable results | Every unrelated position |
| Skills | Tags matching your real service and search language | Tools you do not use |
| Hourly rate | A starting signal matching real costs and positioning | A random minimum just to win orders |
According to Upwork's profile guide, roughly the first 250 characters of the profile description appear in search results; the photo must be a real portrait, personal contact details must not be written into the profile, and other people's work must not be presented as your own. Relevant off-platform experience and projects can be added honestly.
Two good samples signal more clearly than ten unrelated pieces. If you have no real client work, prepare a concept brief yourself, label it a "concept project" and do not invent results. Take the case-study structure from the strong portfolio guide.
Apply to suitable jobs, not to every listing
A listing being freshly posted does not automatically make it a good opportunity. Before spending Connects, read the work itself and the client's risk separately.
| Check | Positive signal | Reason to stop |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Deliverables, goal and constraints are clear | Several professions stuffed into one budget |
| Fit | You have at least one directly relevant portfolio piece | You would be learning the core skill on the job |
| Client | History, reviews and hiring behaviour make sense | The promises contradict the profile data |
| Payment | Billing method shows as verified | Immediate work demanded with unverified payment |
| Competition | Proposal count and interview activity still justify it | Selection is effectively over; you would only burn Connects |
| Safety | Communication and payment stay within Upwork | Free full work, crypto, cheques or off-platform payment demanded |
"Payment method verified" does not mean the client is a good person or the project is guaranteed to pay. Under Upwork's current explanation, if the billing method is unverified the platform cannot process payment and hourly protection does not apply. If a contract is paused, pause the work and deliveries too.
How do you write an Upwork proposal?
A proposal is not a short copy of your profile. A good proposal picks up a concrete detail from the listing, shows matching proof, asks about the main uncertainty and offers a safe next step.
- Name the specific situation from the listing in the first sentence.
- Show how you solved similar work with one example.
- Briefly write the two or three steps leading to delivery.
- Ask one important question that changes the scope.
- Note the assumption behind your timeframe and price.
- Attach the relevant portfolio sample and offer to talk within Upwork.
The official proposal submission guide likewise asks for terms and duration, a cover letter, client questions, profile work and samples, review and a next step together. Text generated with Uma can be edited; but sending an unchecked ready-made AI answer proves neither your experience nor the listing's real detail. Check how to tie the tool into a service separately in the models for earning with AI.
Sending the same text to a hundred listings is not scale; it is a loss of fit. First write individual proposals for five highly relevant listings; if there are no views or interviews, change the first two sentences, the sample and the listing selection separately.
How are Connects, pricing and the Upwork commission calculated?
Connects are the platform's unit used to submit proposals and for some visibility products. Upwork's Connects document shows that the required number can vary by listing, and that some free Connects opportunities differ by account and campaign. So calculate your monthly application budget with the current price you see on screen.
Do not measure the cost of an application by the Connects count alone:
- application cost = Connects used × that day's purchase price of one Connect;
- interview cost = total application cost ÷ relevant interviews obtained;
- client acquisition cost = Connects, boosts and preparation time ÷ number of paid contracts;
- net income = contract revenue − Upwork fee − withdrawal/currency − tools and subcontractors − tax.
The official service fee document dated 30 July 2026 shows the freelancer fee in a 0–15 percent range per contract; the exact percentage is visible when applying or when the client sends an offer, and stays fixed for that contract after it starts. Do not automatically assume 10 percent for yourself from this range.
For example, if the screen shows a 10 percent fee for a specific contract, 270 dollars remain from 300 dollars of revenue after the Upwork fee. This is only an arithmetic example: withdrawal, currency, tools, unsold sales time and tax are not included. Calculate your service's minimum separately with the freelance pricing guide.
What do contracts and payment protection cover?
| Contract | Before starting work | Core behaviour for protection |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed price | An active and fully funded milestone | Delivering the work matching the milestone's scope via "Submit Work for Payment" |
| Hourly | An active contract, verified billing and a weekly limit | Desktop App tracker, relevant screen activity, memos and time within the limit |
For fixed-price protection, the milestone must be fully funded before work starts, the delivery must be sent through the platform's payment button, and it must match the agreed scope. The platform cannot later help recover work done on an unfunded milestone; protection is not a payment guarantee in every situation.
Hourly protection is tied to time tracked with the Upwork Desktop App, with work-related screen activity and memos, and within the weekly limit. Manually added, idle, unrelated, memo-less and over-limit time is not protected; identity verification and the client's billing verification are also among the conditions.
Before a contract starts, the goal, deliverables, price and communication must stay within Upwork. Sharing personal contact details, agreeing to off-platform payment, doing a free full test, accepting fake cheques or crypto deposits puts your account and your money at risk. Compare withdrawal options for foreign income in the payments guide, and the storefront-service model instead of listings with Fiverr.
A 30-day plan for the first order
| Period | Work | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Choose one service, one buyer, one deliverable | The offer is clear in one sentence |
| Days 4–7 | Prepare two honest portfolio samples and the profile | Each sample shows your role and its limitations |
| Days 8–14 | Send individual proposals to five highly relevant listings | Record views, replies and interviews separately |
| Days 15–21 | Change one of: listing filter, first sentence, sample or price | What changed is visible with a date |
| Days 22–27 | A second set of five listings and interview preparation | Scope, timeframe, milestones and questions are written down |
| Days 28–30 | Calculate costs and results, then decide | There is a reason to keep, change or stop |
No order from ten proposals is not a universal failure threshold. But it gives enough signal to investigate: no views — the listing choice and first screen; views but no replies — the proof; interviews but no contract — the scope, communication and price. You can revisit the overall online income choice in the pillar guide across 12 models.
Frequently asked questions about Upwork
How does Upwork work?
The freelancer creates a profile, spends Connects to submit a proposal to a relevant listing, talks with the client on the platform, and a contract starts when terms are agreed. Work is done via hourly time tracking or funded milestones; payment is processed through Upwork and the current fee applied to the contract is deducted.
What do you need to get your first order on Upwork?
A narrow service, two honest work samples matching that service, a complete profile, carefully chosen listings and an individual proposal. Do not cover the lack of reviews in your first applications with fabricated results. Show a concrete detail from the listing, matching proof, your approach, one important question and a safe next step.
What percentage does Upwork charge?
In the official document dated 30 July 2026, the freelancer service fee ranges from 0 to 15 percent depending on the contract. The applied rate is visible when submitting a proposal or opening the client's offer, and does not change during the contract. Price your work correctly together with withdrawal, tool, time and tax costs.
What are Connects, and are they all refunded?
Connects are Upwork's virtual unit for submitting proposals and using some visibility features. The required number can vary by listing. Spent Connects are not automatically returned on every rejection or unanswered application; check your account history and the official rules for the current refund cases.
Does Upwork's payment protection guarantee payment?
No. Protection only supports the dispute and payment process for work done by the rules. Fixed price requires a funded milestone and official delivery; hourly work requires the tracker, work-related activity, memos, the limit and verified billing. Work without a contract or outside the rules may not be protected.
The goal of the first order is not to win any job at all. It is to work with a suitable client at a manageable scope, deliver on time and create real proof you can use in the next project. The platform organises this process; your reputation is built by the decisions you make on every contract.
