In short: SEO helps search engines and potential customers understand your website. Start with three pages: your homepage, your main offer and your contact page. Give each task an owner, a deadline and evidence that it works.

Who is this for

For business owners and marketers launching a service website or small online shop without an SEO team.

What you'll get

  • Check whether Google can access your priority pages.
  • Turn your main offer page into a useful buying guide.
  • Leave with a task log and a manageable monthly review.

1. Check that Google can find your pages

  1. ☐ Add your website to Google Search Console and verify ownership. It reports how your site appears in Google Search.
  2. ☐ Inspect your priority pages using URL Inspection. Check indexing, which means inclusion in Google’s search database.
  3. ☐ Submit your sitemap if available. This file lists page addresses; get its location from your website platform or developer.
  4. ☐ Assign reported access problems to your developer and check again after the fix.

Follow [Google’s Search Console setup guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/search-console-start). The tool identifies issues; someone still needs to fix them.

2. Make your offer clear before adding more pages

  • ☐ Write down three questions customers ask before buying. A gift shop might start with delivery areas, arrival dates and returns.
  • ☐ Give each page a distinct, descriptive title. Use the words customers use without repeating them unnaturally.
  • ☐ Explain what the customer gets, what it costs and how to order. Replace vague promises with actual terms.
  • ☐ Link to important pages from your navigation. Use labels such as “Delivery information” that explain the destination.
  • ☐ End the page with one clear action, such as requesting a quote or choosing a product.

For guidance on titles, useful content and links, see [Google’s SEO starter guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide).

3. Test the customer journey and keep a record

  1. ☐ Open the site on your phone and try to buy or enquire. Check text, navigation and buttons.
  2. ☐ Submit a test enquiry. Confirm that it reaches the right inbox and that the visitor sees a confirmation.
  3. ☐ Create a Google Sheets task log with page, issue, owner, deadline and result. Fix broken access and enquiry paths first.
  4. ☐ At the end of the first month, record Search Console impressions and clicks. Impressions count appearances in search results; clicks count visits through those results.
  5. ☐ Track enquiries and orders separately. Compare equal periods each month and choose one improvement to work on.

The [Search Console guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/search-console-start) explains search reporting. Your spreadsheet is a manual log unless you set up a separate data connection.

FAQ

Does completing this checklist guarantee rankings?

No. Treat it as a launch baseline. Changes take time and first place is never guaranteed, as [Google’s guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide) explains. Record your changes so you can review their effect.

Should I buy an SEO subscription before starting?

You can complete this checklist without one. Start with Search Console, a spreadsheet and a manual review. Consider paid software when you can name the recurring task it would help you complete.
